Prospects for the Science Book Prize

I’ve just put up a more expansive comment on the Prospect blog about the demise of the Science Book Prize. Sob.

Of course, you can always form a union, collect subs, then fund the thing yourselves.

After all, it's not the money...

Actually that's not a bad idea, even if it would look a little like patting ourselves on the back. But I don't know about the union bit - I watched the steady erosion of NUJ membership within Nature over the Thatcher/Major years, and am not optimistic about recovering anything like that. We pay subs already, and they wouldn't cover anything like this - but the judges were never paid in any case. Hmm.

OK, call it an 'Association'; the idea is not to give so much for a bounty to the winners, but to pay for somebody to look after the administration, and buy all the paraphernalia of the Association.

Membership would then be by recommendation of members, whom could collaborate via a dedicated blog and or website.
