When invented, was it not described as "A solution looking for a problem". Now the laser is part of the definition of the 'metre', simply due to its high precision for measuring time and distance.<br /><br />And isn't 'anthropogenic global warming', or what ever its re-branded name is these days, an example of hypotheses leading the physical data?
