Now I feel a bit shame-faced about the 'wrong turn' crack in my post — it I were a less impatient writer I'd have more finesse.<br /><br />With regard to the functional appearance of much modern equipment, I take your point about it needing to look serious and objective. Part of the loss of character is perhaps also due to the constraints and economies involved in producing something for the mass market, so less time is spent on decorative elements.
